My Actual Wedding Party Game that you need to hear…

When I was getting married I wanted my wedding to be fun and easy going but I knew that we had to overcome the natural barrier that exists when people are meeting for the first time.

In order to combat the issue we devised our first dinner party game. We added an introduction game immediately after the ceremony and I am happy to say that we still receive compliments from people who say that it was the best wedding they had ever been to.

Our focus was on the sharing of fun for everyone there instead of just on us. That same outlook is paramount anytime you are entertaining.

Let me share with you what we did to make it so interesting. Our wedding was held in a location that did not involve any driving from ceremony to reception. Once a guest arrived, it was our goal that they were fully taken care of by us, their hosts. We felt that it was especially important to us while we were off getting our wedding pictures taken. My new husband and I would not have been able to enjoy our day if we were worried about how everyone was getting along without us.

To introduce everyone to each other without us there, we created a scavenger hunt by using interesting unknown facts about our guests. The only way they could find out who fit which fact was to talk to each and every person. Although I was not there to enjoy the occasion I was told how much fun it was walking around and finding who was who.

What I was able to see was the outcome of that introduction game at the reception. Everyone was having so much fun with their newly found friends that we were not their sole focus. That allowed my husband and I to eat our dinner and enjoy everything that we had worked so hard to create.

Since that day of our wedding, we have incorporated many types of dinner games into our dinner parties or get-togethers.

Conversation Starters

I first learned about the value of conversation starters when I was in college. A book came out called the Book of Questions by Gregory Stock, MD and I had to purchase it. (An updated version is out at all bookstores and I recommend that you have a copy in your home)

The book was filled with questions that were designed to elicit conversations. Most of the questions are controversial but if you love passionate exchanges of thoughts and like to get a deeper look into those people in your life, it is truly wonderful.

I wanted that concept to be added to my dinner parties without the controversy. I wanted fun easy flowing conversation that kept the party stimulated. I am also a Gemini with a natural curiosity.

Those two together, curiosity and the desire for great conversation, lead to my building a list of conversation starters. These starters were questions that I could pull out how ever I choose to and introduce a conversation topic that could last for hours.

One of my favorite conversation starters is this question: “Where and when was your favorite meal”

The last time I asked that question was at a dinner party with new neighbors of mine and I ended being told about a gourmet meal in Iceland. After that conversation I personally have added Iceland to my list of places to go in my lifetime.
